Mr. Altezza is not your typical driver. He likes to drive a sedan — a Chevrolet Volt and Ford Focus , while at work, for various tasks. “I’m a lot of fun,” he said. He prefers to drive rather than his car.

“I’m pretty good at this,” he said. “I go for it.”

Mr. Altezza, a 45-year-old German who has only four children, said that he enjoys spending time with his mother in Kampala: “It’s great! My sister takes care of the house,” he said.

Even so, he has a hard time accepting his own existence. “The most important thing I can do is focus on my job,” he said. “I can’t feel like I’m being told to work. Do I have to carry my stuff in my hand and get on to work?”

He said the feeling of “living in poverty” will not diminish his work ethic. “The economy is still a problem,” he said, noting that the government will make all the decisions about hiring public sector workers. For those wanting to see more,
