Apple unveiled its iPhone 13 line in September 2021, and our engineers lost no time in putting the Pro Max model through DXOMARK’s rigorous Display protocol tests. Here are some of the key results.

Its smoothness and accuracy when browsing, excellent color fidelity, and outstanding HDR10 rendering all add up to a very enjoyable multimedia experience in all conditions.
Although the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s brightness is not the highest among devices on the market — measured at 1066 nits vs. the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (Snapdragon) measured at 1379 nits, for example — the 13 Pro Max maintains the right level of brightness for most conditions, adjusts to transitions very smoothly, provides consistent contrast, and delivers the most faithful details among all devices in our entire database, proving itself worthy of the top score for readability.
Apple’s True Tone feature is on by default. It uses sensors to measure the ambient light color and brightness, and then automatically adjusts the display to correctly show white tones under any lighting conditions. As a result, the latest Pro Max adapts its white point to the illuminant with very smooth transitions, and its rendering does not have the yellow appearance of the iPhone 12 Pro Max and earlier models. While the Samsung device’s white point is acceptable, it does not adapt its white point to the illuminant; moreover, the 13 Pro Max manages artifacts better than its rival, with well-managed flicker and almost no aliasing.
