It said the US was “committed to maintaining security and stability in the region.”

“Today’s announcement is significant as it confirms our commitment to the security of the continent and to improving South Sudan,” said the EU’s spokesman for Africa. “… The decision will enable the European leadership to make its priorities clear on South Sudan, including ensuring its own national security, stability, and peacekeeping efforts. It also ensures that the current crisis and instability continue to affect all countries that hold diplomatic positions in South Sudan and that have diplomatic interests,” he said.

South Sudan is a strategically important transit route for US supplies and humanitarian supplies across parts of the country from Jordan to Djibouti and has made efforts to keep US-based troops stationed there in the region after the September 12, 2008 attacks by al-Qaida-linked South Sudanese rebels.
